The Democratic Republic of the Congo is battling its first Ebola outbreak in three years, with 31 deaths and 48 confirmed cases reported. WHO warns the situation is “extremely serious” as the outbreak spreads across Kasai Province, prompting urgent vaccination and expanded treatment measures.

Outbreak Spread Across Kasai

The outbreak was declared on 4 September 2025 in Bulape, Kasai Province. Initially confined to two districts, it has now spread to four health zones, raising fears of broader contagion. The index case is believed to be a 34-year-old pregnant woman who died on 26 August, with subsequent infections among health workers and relatives. Over 900 contacts are being monitored, with tracing coverage rising above 90%.

Medical Response and Vaccination

A 34-bed Ebola treatment centre has been established in Bulape, where 16 patients are currently receiving care. Laboratory turnaround has improved to 4–6 hours after on-site upgrades. Vaccination campaigns began with 400 Ervebo doses, and an additional 45,000 doses are being deployed. By mid-September, over 523 frontline health workers and contacts had been vaccinated.

Challenges and Regional Risks

Authorities face serious logistical barriers, including poor roads, vaccine storage limitations, and difficult access to remote communities. Africa CDC has warned of possible spread into neighboring Angola. WHO has delivered 14 tons of medical supplies, deployed dozens of experts, and appealed for $21 million in funding to sustain operations and community outreach.

Lessons From Past Outbreaks

Ebola, discovered in the 1970s, remains endemic in Central Africa’s forests. The 2014–2016 West African epidemic killed more than 11,000 people, underscoring the importance of swift response. Officials stress that vaccination, safe burials, and public cooperation will be crucial to containing the Kasai outbreak.
