A drone flew over the Gaza-bound Freedom Flotilla ship Madeleine late Tuesday, prompting heightened fears among international activists aboard of a potential Israeli attack.

French Member of the European Parliament Rima Hassan, one of the activists aboard, told Al Jazeera, “We fear being attacked, whether by drone, submarine, or sabotage.” She added, “What we may face is dangerous, but it cannot be compared to what Gazans endure daily.”

The Madeleine set sail from Sicily on Sunday, aiming to breach the Israeli blockade and deliver humanitarian supplies to Gaza. The mission follows a failed attempt in early May, when another flotilla vessel was stopped near Malta.

Freedom Flotilla: Symbolic Resistance and Risk

The Madeleine is the 36th ship in the Freedom Flotilla series, launched to challenge Israel’s blockade and spotlight the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The initiative recalls the 2010 Mavi Marmara raid, in which 10 Turkish nationals were killed by Israeli forces, and dozens of activists detained.

The current mission carries both supplies and a strong message of solidarity. Organizers say the voyage is not only about aid, but about asserting the right to sail to Gaza free from intimidation.

Israel Silent, Activists Brace for Confrontation

While Israel has not commented publicly on the drone overflight, its navy has previously threatened flotilla vessels. Activists remain concerned that Madeleine could be disabled before reaching Gaza, echoing previous incidents involving drone strikes and sabotage.

The ship is currently navigating the eastern Mediterranean. International monitors and media outlets have called for transparency and nonviolence as tensions rise.
