A Democratic lawmaker has introduced legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives aimed at preventing U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration from pursuing the purchase, annexation or military takeover of Greenland.

A new bill introduced in the U.S. House seeks to shut down any attempt by U.S. President Donald Trump to bring Greenland under American control, underscoring mounting political resistance to an idea the president has publicly championed since his first term.
Greenland Sovereignty Protection Act
According to reporting by Axios, the legislation — titled the Greenland Sovereignty Protection Act — was introduced by Democratic Representative Jimmy Gomez of California. The bill would prohibit the use of federal funds for any activity that supports or facilitates the invasion, annexation, purchase or other acquisition of Greenland by the United States or any federal entity.
The proposal also seeks to limit the expansion of U.S. military forces on the island and to prevent public campaigns aimed at influencing Greenland’s population to support U.S. control.
Competing Proposals in Congress
The Democratic initiative comes after a Republican lawmaker advanced a sharply different proposal. Earlier, Florida Representative Randy Fine introduced legislation calling for Greenland’s annexation by the United States, with the territory ultimately becoming a U.S. state.
The competing bills reflect a deepening split within Congress over how Washington should approach Greenland, a strategically important Arctic territory.
Trump’s Renewed Interest in Greenland
President Trump has repeatedly argued that Greenland should become part of the United States. During his first term, he floated the idea of purchasing the island, and in March 2025 he said he was confident Greenland could be annexed. He also warned that Denmark could face trade tariffs if it opposed such a move.
Denmark’s government has firmly rejected those claims. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has stressed that Greenland is not for sale and remains an integral part of the Danish kingdom.
Greenland’s Status and Defense Arrangements
Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. In 1951, Washington and Copenhagen signed the Greenland Defense Agreement, supplementing their commitments under NATO. Under the agreement, the United States pledged to help defend the island against potential aggression.
As debate intensifies in Washington, the future of U.S.-Greenland relations is becoming an increasingly visible issue, blending questions of sovereignty, security and Arctic geopolitics.
