Colombia's National Electoral Council officially confirmed Abelardo de la Espriella as the country's president-elect on Wednesday.

The election was a bitterly contested runoff that saw the Trump-endorsed conservative lawyer defeat left-wing Senator Iván Cepeda by fewer than 250,000 votes out of nearly 26 million cast.

Acting National Registrar Jaime Hernando Suarez formally declared De la Espriella elected for the 2026-2030 term, with José Manuel Restrepo as vice president.

De la Espriella, representing the Defenders of the Homeland Movement, secured 49.66% of the vote against Cepeda's 48.70%, a margin of less than 1%.

National Electoral Council head Cristian Quiroz described the completion of the count as "one of the most important and historic steps of our democracy," calling it not a bureaucratic exercise but "the most rigorous verification of the people's will."

A Concession That Came Late

The result had been clear since Sunday night's preliminary count yet Cepeda and outgoing President Gustavo Petro initially refused to recognise it, saying they would wait for the official scrutiny process.

After the final count confirmed a 99.997% match with preliminary figures, Cepeda called a press conference in Bogotá and conceded.

"At this stage of the count, I have decided to accept the result of the process, which indicates that Abelardo de la Espriella is the new president of the republic. I do so as an act of democratic responsibility. I do so to contribute to coexistence, peace, and dialogue among Colombians," he said.

He added, however, that accepting the result did not mean "renouncing the truth or remaining silent in the face of facts that we consider serious."

Cepeda specifically condemned what he called foreign interference in Colombia's internal affairs, pointing to Trump's social media endorsements of De la Espriella and his description of Cepeda as a "radical left Marxist."

Petro, in a lengthy social media post announcing the start of the transition process, wrote that handing over power felt like giving Simón Bolívar's sword "to a viceroy," a pointed reference to Trump's backing of the president-elect.

De la Espriella also signaled a sharp reversal of Petro's foreign policy toward Israel.

"Colombia will restore and strengthen its relationship with the State of Israel like never before," he said.

"Israel can count on Colombia as a loyal friend and steadfast ally. May God bless our two nations."

The statement marks a dramatic departure from Petro, who severed diplomatic ties with Israel in 2024 over the Gaza war and was among the most vocal critics of Israeli military operations in the region.

Who Is De la Espriella

De la Espriella, 47, is a criminal defense attorney and businessman who campaigned on a hardline law-and-order platform focused on defeating guerrilla groups, dismantling drug trafficking networks, and tackling rising crime.

His message was amplified by an explicit and repeated social media endorsement from Trump, who threw his support behind the candidate during the campaign's final weeks.

De la Espriella has announced that Colombia will join the "Shield of the Americas," the Trump-backed initiative grouping far-right governments across the region.

With his August 7 inauguration, only four countries in Latin America will remain under left-wing governance, a dramatic regional shift from just a few years ago when the left dominated the continent's major economies.

"Colombia will NO longer be governed by an administration that is complacent towards narco-terrorism.

We will combat it as it should be fought," De la Espriella wrote following his victory.
