Colombia Suspends Intelligence Sharing with the U.S.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has ordered the suspension of all security and intelligence exchanges with the United States, citing Washington’s continuing military actions in the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. The move reflects Bogotá’s growing discontent with what it views as heavy-handed U.S. operations in the region.

Petro’s Strong Reaction

In a post shared on X, President Petro declared, “I have instructed all levels of the public security apparatus to suspend communication and intelligence sharing with U.S. security agencies.” His statement marks one of the most significant breaks in Colombia’s long-standing security cooperation with Washington.

Suspension to Continue Amid Ongoing Strikes

Petro made clear that the suspension would remain in effect as long as U.S. forces continue their missile strikes against vessels operating in the Caribbean and Pacific. “The fight against drug trafficking must be carried out with full respect for the human rights of the Caribbean people,” he said, warning that current operations were causing civilian casualties.

Rising Civilian Toll

According to national media reports, nearly 70 people have been killed in recent U.S. attacks targeting boats allegedly involved in drug trafficking. The deaths have reignited debates over human rights violations and the legality of these strikes under international law. Petro’s government has criticized the operations as disproportionate and counterproductive.
