U.S. Special Presidential Envoy Tom Barrack disclosed that Ankara received no advance warning before Israeli aircraft targeted Syria’s Abu al-Duhur military airbase near the Turkish border.

The unannounced operation prompted Turkish air defenses to track incoming jets and prepare potential defensive measures, Barrack said, noting that Turkish military forces detected the foreign aircraft heading north toward their territorial boundary.

“Thankfully, calm heads were able to prevent the situation from deteriorating further,” Barrack said.

Washington is now moving rapidly to construct a trilateral communications channel to link military authorities in Israel, Syria, and Türkiye.

Perceived Deployment Drives Airstrikes

The bombardment occurred early on Tuesday, when Israeli jets fired on the runway and storage facilities at the Idlib province installation, roughly 70 kilometers from the Turkish border.

The facility has served as a instruction center for Syria's new military under the interim government of Ahmed al-Sharaa following the collapse of Bashar al-Assad's administration in December 2024.

Barrack indicated the attack stemmed from intelligence assumptions regarding Ankara's military intentions at the location, stating the action reflected a perception “whether accurate or misplaced” that Türkiye might soon expand its presence at the base.

“This underscores the need for a deconfliction mechanism involving Israel, Syria and Türkiye,” Barrack said, adding that Washington is “actively working” to build the framework to lower regional friction.

Escalation Risks Along The Frontier

Syrian officials reported eight distinct air impacts that damaged infrastructure without causing casualties, characterizing the operation as an illegal violation of national sovereignty.

Although Israel declined to issue an official acknowledgement of the operation, Barrack publicly attributed the strikes to Israeli forces and termed the action an “unnecessary escalation that does not advance regional stability.”

The incident highlights growing structural friction between foreign militaries operating inside Syrian territory as Washington attempts to prevent direct confrontations among regional actors.
