The offensive began Sunday in Gumarre and extended into Monday with assaults on military facilities in Moqokori. Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attacks and released photos allegedly showing fighters inside government compounds. The group said it killed at least 40 soldiers during the clashes.

Residents reported that government troops and allied Macawiisley militias retreated to the outskirts of the town. Sporadic gunfire continued in the area, and militants were seen moving openly within Moqokori by Monday morning.

Conflicting Reports On Outcome

While Somali state media claimed that government forces repelled the attack and inflicted heavy losses on Al-Shabaab, no formal statement has been issued by federal or Hirshabelle state officials. The situation remains fluid, with both sides providing contradictory narratives.

Moqokori, under government control since 2022, becomes the second town to fall this year after Al-Shabaab seized Aadan Yabaal in the Middle Shabelle region.

Insurgency Expands Despite Military Campaigns

The fall of Moqokori underscores Al-Shabaab’s resilience amid ongoing military campaigns aimed at rooting the group out of rural areas. Despite support from local militias and international partners, Somali forces have struggled to hold territory, especially in central and southern regions.

The loss raises further concerns over government control and the group’s continued ability to mount complex operations.
