Mahas, located in Hiiraan region, serves as a critical junction connecting towns in Galgaduud, Middle Shabelle, and Hiiraan. Its capture provides Al-Shabaab with enhanced logistical access to major towns like Baladweyne, Buulobarde, Matabaan, Elbur, and Guriel, making it strategically vital for both command and supply operations.

General Mohamed Tahlil Bihi, a former ground forces commander in the Somali National Army, described the loss of Mahas as a serious breach in the country’s security strategy. He warned that unless the government takes immediate action, Al-Shabaab could expand further across central Somalia. Bihi also called for the formation of a national commission to investigate the incident and review Somalia’s broader military posture.

This event follows a string of recent territorial setbacks for the federal government. Al-Shabaab captured Aadan Yabal in April and Moqokori in June, and has retaken over 20 settlements in Hiiraan, Lower Shabelle, and Middle Shabelle since February.

Reversal Of Earlier Gains

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud launched a nationwide military campaign in 2022 aimed at reclaiming territory from Al-Shabaab in collaboration with local clan fighters. Although initial operations yielded significant successes, the group has since regained strength, reversing many of those gains.

Mahas had been viewed as a government stronghold in Hiiraan and was visited by President Hassan in 2023. At the time, he praised local residents and security forces for their resistance against Al-Shabaab. Its recent loss now casts doubt on the sustainability of federal control over liberated areas and reflects the growing challenges facing Somali authorities in maintaining long-term stability.
