Al-Shabaab has claimed to have recaptured the village of Tardo in Somalia’s Hiran region, dealing a fresh blow to Somali government forces and local militias. The militant group’s announcement comes shortly after it also seized control of Moqokori, further highlighting its persistent threat in central Somalia despite years of counterinsurgency efforts.

According to local reports, Al-Shabaab’s takeover of Tardo reverses gains made by Ma’awisley clan fighters and the Somali army, who had seized the village in 2022. The recent capture of both Tardo and Moqokori strengthens the group’s grip on strategic routes and resources, which are vital for movement and logistics within the Hiran.

Residents of nearby Mahaas report increased military activity, with reinforcements arriving from Galgudud to support local forces. However, local elders have yet to announce any plans for a counteroffensive.

The resurgence of Al-Shabaab in these areas underscores the fragile security situation in central Somalia. Government forces and allied militias continue to face stiff resistance from the group, whose attacks have disrupted efforts to stabilize the region. As clashes intensify, civilians are enduring increased insecurity and disruptions to daily life, raising alarms over the growing humanitarian toll.

No official statement has been released by Somali government forces regarding their next steps or responses to Al-Shabaab’s recent gains.
