At least 16 people were killed and 400 injured across Kenya as a nationwide protest erupted into chaos on Wednesday, June 25. The protests, which aimed to honor victims of last year’s deadly anti-tax demonstrations, turned violent when police confronted crowds in multiple cities, including Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, and Kisumu.
Amnesty Kenya’s executive director Irũngũ Houghton confirmed the death toll, citing the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights. “Most were killed by police,” he stated.
Government Buildings Blocked, Live Broadcasts Cut
Police sealed off the central business district in Nairobi, blocking access to parliament and President William Ruto’s official residence with razor wire. The Communications Authority of Kenya ordered TV and radio outlets to cease live broadcasts of the unrest, taking networks like NTV, KTN, K24, and Kameme off the air after noncompliance.
Rising Anger Amid Brutality and Injustice
Protesters marched with placards bearing images of the 2024 victims, chanting against President Ruto and lighting fires. A joint statement by civil society groups said at least 83 people were seriously injured, with eight being treated for gunshot wounds.
“We face an unfortunate paradox… where more lives are being lost as people seek justice for the lives already lost,” said Law Society of Kenya president Faith Odhiambo.
Youth Take the Lead
Youths were especially visible in the demonstrations. Protester Stephanie Marie told reporters, “It could be my brother, it could be anyone… we just want [leaders] to listen.” Another protester, Innocent, said, “The youth are unstoppable… we don’t want bad leadership.”
