U.S. Reconsiders Ukraine’s Anti-Drone Technology After Iran Attacks
Ukrainian officials offered the U.S. their combat-tested technology to destroy Iranian Shahed drones in August 2025, but Washington rejected the proposal. After Iran’s drone strikes intensified during the war that began on Feb. 28, the U.S. has now requested Kyiv’s help.

The United States has begun reconsidering Ukraine’s battle-tested technology for countering Iranian attack drones after initially rejecting Kyiv’s proposal months before the outbreak of the Iran war.
Ukrainian officials first presented the plan during a closed-door White House meeting on Aug. 18, when President Volodymyr Zelensky offered interceptor drone systems designed to destroy Iranian-made Shahed attack drones.
During the meeting, Ukrainian officials presented a PowerPoint briefing outlining the growing threat posed by Iran’s expanding drone arsenal.
The presentation included a map of the Middle East and warned that “Iran is improving its Shahed one-way-attack drone design.”
Ukraine proposed creating “drone combat hubs” in countries hosting U.S. military bases, including Türkiye, Jordan and Gulf states, to counter drone threats from Iran and allied groups.
“We wanted to build the ‘drone walls’ and all the things necessary like the radar,” a Ukrainian official said.
Despite the proposal, the idea was not pursued by the U.S. administration at the time.
One U.S. official later acknowledged that ignoring the proposal may have been a significant tactical mistake.
“If there's a tactical error or a mistake we made leading up to this war in Iran, this was it,” the official said.
The conflict that began on Feb. 28 has highlighted the effectiveness of Iran’s Shahed attack drones, which have been widely used in retaliatory strikes against U.S. positions and allied facilities.
According to U.S. officials, Iranian drone attacks have been linked to the deaths of seven American service members and have forced the United States and its allies to spend millions of dollars intercepting the low-cost weapons.
A typical Shahed drone costs between $20,000 and $50,000, making them far cheaper than the sophisticated missiles often used to shoot them down.
Ukraine has gained extensive experience countering the drones during Russia’s war, where Moscow has deployed thousands of Shahed-type systems under the name Geran.
Ukrainian engineers developed low-cost interceptor drones and detection systems designed specifically to destroy these targets.
U.S. Now Seeking Solutions
Last week, the United States formally requested assistance from Ukraine in countering Iranian drone threats.
The U.S. military has also begun deploying its own anti-drone technology, including a system known as Merops, while continuing to rely on helicopters such as AH-64 Apache gunships to intercept incoming UAVs.
Other allied systems are also being deployed, including Wildcat helicopters equipped with Martlet missiles, which the United Kingdom has pledged to send.
White House spokesperson Anna Kelly said Iranian retaliatory attacks have already declined significantly.
“Iranian retaliatory attacks are down by 90% because their ballistic missile capabilities are being totally demolished,” she said.
Despite those gains, officials acknowledge the need for more cost-effective counter-drone technologies as the conflict continues.
Ukraine had previously proposed a broader partnership with the United States that included building drone manufacturing capacity in America while sharing Ukrainian combat experience.
According to Ukrainian officials, Kyiv estimated it could help produce up to 20 million drone systems through joint production arrangements if the U.S. provided investment support.
