One Iranian Salvo May Have Cost US $500M in Patriot Interceptors
Iran’s latest ballistic missile attack on a U.S.-used base in Jordan triggered an estimated 60 to 100 Patriot launches within minutes, underscoring the growing strain on U.S. interceptor stocks already depleted by months of combat.

Iran’s latest ballistic missile strike on Wednesday night on a U.S.-used air base in Jordan triggered one of the most intense Patriot engagements of the conflict, when stockpiles are already critically low.
Dramatic footage showed massive Patriot salvos, with open-source estimates suggesting 60 to more than 100 interceptors were launched within minutes against roughly 20 incoming missiles.
The scale of the response highlights a growing problem for Washington: Patriot batteries can defeat concentrated ballistic missile attacks, but only by consuming expensive interceptors at a pace that existing U.S. inventories and production cannot quickly replace.
At roughly $4 million for each PAC-3 MSE interceptor, the engagement may have consumed about $240 million to more than $400 million in missiles.
If launch counts approached the upper end of estimates and included rounds costing closer to $5 million, the expenditure could have exceeded $500 million.
Minutes to Respond
The Iranian missiles were aimed at Muwaffaq Salti, also known as Al-Azraq Air Base, where U.S. aircraft and personnel operate.
Jordanian authorities said their air defenses engaged all 20 incoming missiles and destroyed 18. The remaining two landed in unpopulated areas, with no casualties reported.
U.S. officials described the strike as ineffective and said all American personnel were accounted for.
Iranian claims that the attack caused substantial damage to hangars and shelters were not independently confirmed.
The engagement unfolded within a narrow window.
Medium-range ballistic missiles traveling from western Iran toward eastern Jordan can reach their targets in several minutes to roughly 15 minutes.
Early-warning satellites and ground-based radars can detect and track launches, but Patriot crews still face a compressed terminal-defense sequence once the targets are handed over.
The PAC-3 MSE uses hit-to-kill technology and an onboard radar during the final stage of interception.
Against ballistic missiles, Patriot units have repeatedly fired several interceptors at individual threats to increase the probability of destruction, particularly when facing maneuvering re-entry vehicles, debris, or possible cluster payloads.
Up to 100 Launches
Open-source assessments of footage from the September 8-9 attack estimated between 60 and more than 100 Patriot launches during the Iranian salvo.
Most were assessed as PAC-3 MSE interceptors, although some PAC-2 launches may also have occurred.
That would imply roughly three to five interceptors fired for every Iranian ballistic missile launched toward the base.
A similar pattern was observed during a late-August engagement over Jordan.
Open-source estimates placed Patriot expenditure at 96 to 128 PAC-3 MSE missiles against roughly 32 incoming threats, again producing a ratio of about three or four interceptors for each target.
The U.S. has already conducted engagements on this scale during previous Iranian attacks.
During the 2025 defense of Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs described the action as the largest single Patriot engagement in U.S. military history, with “dozens” of interceptors launched.
Stocks Already Depleted
The latest salvo comes as Washington faces mounting pressure on its Patriot inventory.
Pre-war U.S. stocks of modern Patriot interceptors were estimated at roughly 2,200 to 2,330 missiles.
By late July 2026, estimates from CSIS and other analyses placed remaining stocks at about 759 to 827, suggesting that roughly two-thirds of the initial inventory had already been consumed after months of high-tempo operations.
The replacement rate remains considerably slower than battlefield expenditure.
Production before the conflict stood at about 600 missiles annually. Contracts are now seeking to increase output toward 2,000 a year, but analysts assess that restoring inventories to their pre-war level could still take several years.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has rejected descriptions of U.S. inventories as “dangerously low.”
Outside assessments and some internal reporting cited in the draft, however, have pointed to growing constraints as Washington balances requirements across Ukraine, NATO and the Indo-Pacific.
A Costly Defense Model
The tactical equation remains favorable when Patriot batteries successfully destroy ballistic missiles before they reach U.S. personnel and infrastructure.
The strategic arithmetic is less comfortable.
A single Iranian raid of around 20 missiles can force the launch of dozens of U.S. interceptors in minutes.
At recent engagement ratios, repeated attacks can rapidly consume stocks that require years of production to rebuild.
The result is an increasingly visible trade-off at the center of U.S. missile defense operations: dense Patriot salvos can blunt Iranian ballistic missile attacks, but every successful engagement further reduces a finite interceptor magazine already under heavy strain.
