Ukrainian authorities launched a massive series of coordinated raids targeting the nation's premier drone manufacturer amid allegations of significant price inflation on state defense contracts.
Law enforcement agents executed approximately 70 search warrants on July 7, targeting the headquarters of Vyriy Industries, contractor facilities, and the private residences of the firm’s chief executive and his family.
The Ukrainian State Bureau of Investigations claims the defense contractor artificially inflated costs on government military contracts valued at $157 million.
Oleksii Babenko, the chief executive of Vyriy Industries, firmly rejected the allegations during a press conference in Kyiv.
He characterized the criminal inquiry as an absurd and deliberate attempt to disrupt corporate operations.
"When your drones are the cheapest on the market, accusing you of price gouging sounds absurd," Babenko told reporters.
He suggested the raids were orchestrated to advance minor personal interests.
State Procurement Scrutiny
The financial probe centers on government contracts awarded to the firm, which manufactures roughly 25 percent of all first-person-view drones deployed by the Ukrainian military.
The State Bureau of Investigations is also examining whether the defense company utilized shell entities to launder capital.
State Financial Monitoring Service officials flagged more than $4.4 million in suspicious transactions at the company.
The Prosecutor General’s Office, currently supervising the inquiry, indicated potential tax evasion after uncovering large amounts of unaccounted cash at the corporate headquarters.
Investigators seized $900,000 during the search of the company offices.
Babenko defended the cash reserves, asserting the funds were legally withdrawn to meet payroll obligations for the company's workforce of over 1,000 employees.
Industry Repercussions
No formal charges have been filed. Babenko is currently designated as a witness in the ongoing investigation, a status that requires his cooperation for future questioning.
The extensive law enforcement action temporarily disrupted the delivery of unmanned aerial vehicles to the front lines. However, Babenko pledged the firm would continue supplying tens of thousands of units daily.
Vyriy Industries serves as a central pillar in the wartime military supply chain, producing fixed-wing, fiber-optic, and kamikaze drones, as well as relay equipment.
The firm reported revenues of $252 million last year, and performance in the first half of the current year has already surpassed its previous annual figure.
Sector Stability Concerns
The sudden crackdown has triggered alarm across the broader defense technology landscape.
Industry figures expressed concern that the aggressive legal action signals the start of a systemic campaign against domestic defense contractors.
Maria Berlinska, co-founder of the Victory Drones initiative, warned against the use of state power for corporate raiding or politically motivated persecution.
Other sector insiders criticized the state procurement apparatus, noting its opacity and prioritization of low costs.
An anonymous industry source argued the focus should shift to the government procurement officials managing the supply chain.
The source emphasized that Vyriy Industries operated within the state's strict procurement parameters, adding that the case gives the government leverage to arbitrarily punish defense firms.
