Türkiye plans to deliver a significant shipment of military equipment — including armored cars, drones, artillery, missiles, and air-defense systems — to Syria within the next several weeks, according to a report by Bloomberg citing Turkish officials familiar with the plan.
The equipment will be deployed primarily in northern Syria, avoiding Israel’s sphere of influence in the southwest, the officials said. Ankara’s presidency declined to comment publicly on the matter, while Syria’s information ministry has not responded to requests for confirmation.
The initiative marks a major step in Ankara’s strategy to stabilize its southern border by backing Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, a former insurgent who overthrew Bashar al-Assad last year. Türkiye sees Sharaa’s government as a counterweight to Kurdish groups that have long controlled parts of northern Syria.
According to Bloomberg’s reporting, Turkish and Syrian officials are negotiating an update to their 1998 Adana Agreement, which currently allows Türkiye to target YPG/SDF terror group up to 5 kilometers (3 miles) inside Syria.
The new arrangement would expand that range to 30 kilometers (19 miles), giving Turkish forces a far broader operational corridor against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and its Syrian affiliate, the People’s Protection Units (YPG).
The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) — backed by the United States — control much of the northeast, including areas rich in oil and gas. Turkish officials told Bloomberg that Ankara wants Sharaa to restrict the SDF’s access to those resources, arguing that oil revenues have been diverted to fund the PKK.
Bloomberg also noted that while the PKK announced its disbandment earlier this year, the disarmament process remains fragile, with Turkish officials wary of potential reorganizations inside Syria.
A deal between Sharaa and the SDF to integrate Kurdish units into Syria’s army has yet to be implemented, signaling ongoing tension between Damascus and Kurdish factions.
