The framework covers 195 ground-combat platforms, including K2 tanks and wheeled armored carriers. If finalized, the package could exceed 2 trillion won and deliver Korea’s first K2 deployment to Latin America.

Agreement Covers Large Vehicle Package

The accord includes 54 K2 battle tanks and 141 wheeled armored vehicles, forming one of Peru’s most extensive modernization programs. Officials said the contract is expected to be completed by June 2026 after technical and financing rounds.

The Peruvian government signed the framework with Korea’s defense leadership in a ceremony attended by senior officials.

Deal Marks Major Export Milestone

If implemented, the deal would represent South Korea’s largest defense export to Latin America, surpassing earlier armored-vehicle sales in the region.

It would also mark the first introduction of the K2 tank to a Latin American army after recent European exports. Korean officials framed the agreement as a strategic step in diversifying markets beyond Europe.

Korea Builds on Rapid Export Growth

The prospective deal comes months after a $6.5 billion K2 contract with Poland, one of Seoul’s biggest single defense sales.

Korea aims to become the world’s fourth-largest arms exporter by 2027, up from its current top-10 ranking. Defense manufacturers highlight delivery speed and production reliability as competitive advantages.

Global Strategy Extends to Latin America

Officials said last year’s cooperation agreement on ground-combat systems paved the way for the new supply framework. The current negotiation reflects Seoul’s broader push to secure markets in regions such as the Middle East and Latin America.

Industry sources expect further collaboration as Peru expands armored and mechanized capabilities.
