An Israeli strike near Iran’s Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant has triggered international concern despite no reported damage or radiation leak, underscoring the risks of escalation in the ongoing U.S.-Israeli military campaign against Iran.

The incident occurred on the evening of March 17, 2026 (local time in Iran), amid intensifying military operations involving the United States and Israel against Iranian targets.

According to confirmed reports, the strike targeted a structure within the Bushehr complex on Iran’s southern coast along the Persian Gulf. The facility houses Iran’s only operational nuclear reactor, a Russian-built VVER-1000 pressurized water reactor that has been in operation since 2011, with additional units under construction.

Estimates place the impact between 150 and 350 meters from the reactor. The targeted site was described as a non-essential or auxiliary building, not part of the reactor core or critical nuclear systems.

Iranian authorities confirmed that the reactor remained intact and that radiation levels were normal. No casualties or injuries among plant personnel were reported.

The International Atomic Energy Agency said it received official notification from Iran. Its Director General, Rafael Mariano Grossi, stressed that while no damage occurred, any attack at or near a nuclear facility violates fundamental safety principles.

Grossi warned that such actions should never take place and described them as crossing a critical “red line” for nuclear safety during armed conflict.

Russia, which built and helps operate the Bushehr plant through Rosatom, issued a strong condemnation.

Rosatom CEO Alexei Likhachev described the strike as a dangerous precedent, warning that even indirect hits near nuclear infrastructure could pose serious risks.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called the incident “irresponsible and utterly unacceptable,” highlighting the proximity to an operational reactor and the presence of Russian personnel at the site.

Russia has already reduced non-essential staff at the facility and suspended some activities due to the deteriorating security environment.

Experts warn that even limited strikes near nuclear facilities could disrupt critical systems such as cooling, power supply, or safety controls, potentially triggering far-reaching consequences.

The Bushehr incident represents one of the rare instances in modern conflict where an operational nuclear power plant has been directly threatened. The IAEA has repeatedly emphasized that military activity near such facilities risks a catastrophic nuclear accident with regional and global implications.
