Germany is considering canceling its troubled F126 frigate construction program amid severe delays, technical setbacks, and growing costs. The CDU has called for a halt to the project, citing persistent failures in coordination and the contractor’s inability to resolve IT-related issues that have severely disrupted progress.

The F126 program, one of the Bundeswehr’s largest naval contracts, aimed to deliver four next-generation multi-role frigates by 2028, with options for two more. However, delays linked to technical issues—especially software interface problems between Dutch shipbuilder Damen Schelde and subcontractors—have led to missed milestones and costly repair work at German shipyards.

Bastian Ernst, a CDU defense committee official, has called for canceling the program altogether and conducting a full review. “These problems are too serious to ignore,” Ernst stated, pushing for investment in more promising alternatives.

Critics argue Germany should focus resources on the F127 frigates, expected to feature the advanced Aegis air defense system, offering greater strategic value. The F127 program is seen as more aligned with Germany’s future defense needs.

Despite the CDU’s pressure, the Defense Ministry remains cautious about scrapping the F126 outright but acknowledges the project's significant difficulties. Construction of the lead ship only began in December 2023, with a keel-laying in June 2024, yet deadlines are already slipping.
