Speaking from the Pentagon, Pistorius said both sides were committed to resolving any remaining hurdles over the Patriot deal “quickly and quietly.” Each Patriot battery is valued at approximately $1 billion, with individual interceptor missiles costing around $4 million.
Germany is also eyeing the purchase of the U.S.-made Typhon mid-range missile system, further signaling Berlin’s intent to reinforce Ukrainian defenses amid increased Russian pressure.
The request follows President Donald Trump’s latest announcement that NATO allies would fund ongoing weapons deliveries to Ukraine. He also threatened to impose 100% secondary tariffs on Moscow unless Russia halts its offensive within 50 days.
Germany’s call for more Patriots reflects broader NATO concern over Ukraine’s air defense gaps. The Patriot systems have been vital in intercepting Russian missile salvos, particularly around major cities and critical infrastructure.
Pistorius’s coordination with Hegseth marks a continuation of Germany’s shift toward more assertive security commitments. The outcome of the request may define the tempo of transatlantic military coordination in the coming months as Ukraine braces for further strikes.
