Denmark has announced a landmark defence procurement: a DKr58 billion (≈ US$9.11 billion) acquisition of eight new European air-defence systems, including long-range SAMP/T and medium-range systems from Germany, France or Norway. Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen called it the country’s biggest ever arms purchase — a response to escalating tensions in Europe and a desire to strengthen NATO readiness and national aerial security.

A Full Spectrum Upgrade: Long & Medium Range Systems

Denmark’s procurement will span multiple capability tiers. The SAMP/T system, produced by Eurosam (a joint venture involving MBDA France, MBDA Italy, and Thales) will cover long-range threats. Medium-range systems are set to come from Germany, France, or Norway—options under consideration include VL MICA, IRIS-T SLM, and NASAMS among others.

Delivery timelines point to phased deployment: initial capacities (medium-range units) begin becoming operational as early as late 2025, with full operational capability spread over subsequent years.

Denmark’s Defense Shift: Key Drivers

Russia’s aggression and regional security concerns have raised NATO’s urgency, prompting Denmark to act quickly. Backed by Frederiksen’s “buy, buy, buy” push, defense spending is set to exceed 3% of GDP soon. The U.S. Patriot system was rejected over cost and delays, with European systems chosen instead to ensure faster delivery, industrial sovereignty, and stronger EU/NATO interoperability.
