A ballistic missile launched from Iran entered Türkiye’s airspace, triggering a NATO interception over the Eastern Mediterranean, according to the Turkish Ministry of National Defense. The projectile was neutralized before reaching populated areas, with debris later falling in Gaziantep province. Authorities reported no casualties, injuries, or structural damage.
The ministry confirmed that NATO air and missile defense elements stationed in the region carried out the interception. In a written statement, officials said: “A ballistic munition fired from Iran that entered Turkish airspace was neutralized by NATO air and missile defense elements deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean.”
NATO also acknowledged the incident and confirmed that the alliance’s defense systems prevented the missile from reaching Turkish territory. In a brief statement, NATO said: “A missile heading toward Türkiye was once again prevented.”
The event marks the second missile incident involving Iran and Türkiye within a single week, underscoring the operational role of NATO’s regional missile-defense framework designed to protect alliance members’ airspace.
Fragments from the intercepted missile landed near the Güneykent neighborhood in the Şahinbey district of Gaziantep at approximately 11:30 local time, according to the Gaziantep Governor’s Office.
Authorities stated that the debris fell in an empty area above TOKİ housing developments, avoiding residential structures. Security forces quickly secured the site while investigation teams began collecting fragments to determine the missile’s type and trajectory.
A resident, Ramazan Akpınar, described hearing a loud noise when the debris hit the ground. “A piece of the missile fell and there was a very loud noise,” he said. He added that the sound came from the impact rather than an explosion: “There was no explosion or flames. The sound was simply from it falling from the air.”
Local authorities confirmed that gendarmerie units and forensic teams arrived at the site shortly after residents alerted officials. Investigators cordoned off the area while conducting technical assessments of the fragments.
The missile incident prompted immediate diplomatic steps from Ankara. According to sources at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Iran’s ambassador in Ankara was summoned and asked to provide an explanation regarding the ballistic missile that entered Turkish airspace.
The Turkish Ministry of National Defense emphasized that Ankara prioritizes regional stability but warned that threats to its territory would be addressed decisively. In its statement, the ministry said: “Türkiye attaches great importance to good-neighborly relations and regional stability. However, all necessary steps will be taken decisively and without hesitation against any threat directed at our territory and airspace.”
Officials also stressed that respecting Türkiye’s warnings is in everyone’s interest, signaling Ankara’s concern about further escalation.
International reactions followed the incident. Spain condemned Iran’s missile launch toward Türkiye and described it as a serious violation of international law and the United Nations Charter. In a statement, the Spanish government said it “strongly and firmly condemns Iran’s missile launch toward Türkiye.”
Erdoğan’s Warning After Second Incident
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan addressed the situation following a cabinet meeting, noting that the incident represented the second missile fired from Iran toward Türkiye within one week.
Erdoğan criticized the launches as provocative and warned against continued escalation between the two neighboring countries. “Despite our sincere warnings, extremely wrong and provocative steps that could strain Türkiye’s friendship continue to be taken,” he said.
He also reiterated Ankara’s efforts to prevent regional tensions from spreading. “Türkiye’s position and stance are clear, and its extraordinary efforts to prevent the fire from spreading further are evident,” Erdoğan said.
The president added that Türkiye would continue coordinating closely with NATO and allied governments as developments unfold. “We will follow developments in coordination with NATO and our other allies and will maintain additional measures to strengthen our security,” he said.
