Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is weighing the dismissal of his top military commander, Gen. Oleksandr Syrsky, amid the most severe leadership crisis of his tenure.
The potential ouster follows a week of intense public protests and the controversial firing of the country's civilian defense minister.
A final decision hinges on finding a successor capable of executing a seamless transfer of power while stabilizing the 1,200-kilometer front line, according to the Financial Times.
Leadership Rupture
The current instability stems from an irreconcilable breakdown in relations between Syrsky and Mykhailo Fedorov, the recently ousted 35-year-old defense minister.
Zelensky dismissed Fedorov this week after an alleged ultimatum from the commander-in-chief.
To navigate the crisis, the president has scheduled weekend consultations with front-line commanders.
These meetings will serve dual purposes: evaluating battlefield conditions and vetting potential replacements for the armed forces' top post.
Friction between the civilian and military leadership had deteriorated to the point of total communication failure.
Zelensky publicly acknowledged his forced role as an intermediary between the two officials.
“Without me, they don’t sit down together (to talk),” Zelensky said. He noted he had “wanted unity very much” but ultimately “did not achieve it.”
Strategic Divergence
The internal conflict highlights fundamental disagreements over operational strategy at a time when battlefield momentum had shifted in Kyiv's favor.
Fedorov championed modernizing the military through drone warfare and automation, an agenda backed by NATO and Western allies.
Conversely, Syrsky favors traditional Soviet-style tactics reliant on artillery and assault infantry.
This approach has earned him the moniker “the Butcher” among certain troops due to his tolerance for high casualty rates.
During an extraordinary Thursday press conference, Fedorov accused the general of stonewalling defense ministry reforms and tolerating corruption.
He argued that modern warfare demands a leadership overhaul, noting that Syrsky failed to adapt to the changing operational environment.
“If we want to defeat the enemy asymmetrically, with minimal losses, we need to change the commander-in-chief and chief of the general staff,” Fedorov stated.
The strategic shift toward asymmetric warfare is already generating results.
Russian authorities reported seven fatalities and 51 injuries from Ukrainian drone strikes across the Moscow and Tambov regions overnight.
Syrsky, who assumed command in February 2024 after the controversial dismissal of Valeriy Zaluzhny, declined to comment on the accusations.
His Thursday public statement omitted any reference to the ousted defense minister's claims.
Rare Public Dissent
Fedorov's sudden termination shocked Western defense attachés in Kyiv and sparked immediate domestic backlash.
Unprecedented public dissent took the form of active-duty soldiers and military veterans joining civilian demonstrations.
Thousands congregated at Ivan Franko Square outside the presidential office on Friday night, demanding the general's resignation.
Similar mass gatherings erupted in major urban centers, including Lviv and Odesa.
Dmytro Koziatynskyi, a veteran coordinating the movement, confirmed the primary objective is Syrsky's removal, followed by the reinstatement of the defense minister.
He mobilized supporters to continue demonstrations through Saturday evening.
Diplomatic Vacuum
Beyond the domestic command crisis, Kyiv faces a critical diplomatic vacancy in the U.S. capital as it prepares for dealings with the incoming Trump administration.
Zelensky is actively pressuring former Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko to accept the role of ambassador to Washington.
Svyrydenko, removed during this week's broader cabinet reshuffle, initially rejected the appointment.
