The Nigerian Army confirmed that its forward operating bases in Niger and Kaduna States came under coordinated assault on June 24. According to a statement, “forward operating bases in the general areas of Kwanar Dutse Mairiga and Boka Niger State, and Aungwan Turai Chikun LGA in Kaduna State, were attacked by bandits in a 3-pronged attack.”
In response, ground and air units “launched several counter-attacks that eliminated scores of bandits.” However, the army acknowledged that “some gallant warriors paid the supreme price in the day-long battles,” while four wounded personnel were receiving medical treatment.
While the army did not disclose exact casualty figures, Premium Times confirmed that 20 soldiers were killed during the ambush near Kwanar Dutse. The assault came just hours after armed groups killed 15 villagers in Tofa, Zamfara State.
On the same day, a deadly confrontation near Cida village in Sokoto State between the gang of Bello Turji and government forces reportedly claimed at least 100 lives.
No group has officially claimed responsibility, but local sources suggest the ambush occurred in an area partially controlled by Dogo Gide’s faction and remnants of the late Ali Kawaje’s network. These gangs, along with other actors including a faction of Boko Haram led by Mallam Sadiku, are active across the region.
The armed groups are known for targeting civilians, military personnel, and miners, often engaging in kidnapping for ransom, cattle rustling, and other violent crimes.
