US Generals Ignored Direct Warnings Before Deadly Iran Strike, Say Surviving Troops

Senior U.S. military commanders systematically disregarded classified intelligence warnings and internal vulnerability assessments before a March 1 Iranian drone strike killed six American soldiers in Kuwait.
Survivors from the Army’s 103rd Sustainment Command indicate that leadership ignored explicit advisories detailing the inadequate air defenses at Port Shuaiba, according to The Washington Post.
A Shahed drone eventually struck the facility's operations center, resulting in the costliest loss of American personnel during the brief conflict.
By December, Brig. Gen. Clint Barnes and Maj. Gen. John Hinson received classified briefings confirming the port was on an Iranian target list.
Internal force-protection assessments simultaneously concluded that the site lacked the capabilities to intercept one-way attack drones.
Ignored Assessments, Defenseless Deployments
Despite these clear vulnerabilities, troops were relocated to the coastal facility. Base personnel actively warned command elements about the impending risk well in advance of the strike.
“We’ve got to change our plan,” one soldier recalled telling Barnes months before the fatal incident. “This is dangerous.”
Requests for critical defensive infrastructure were subsequently denied. Command authorities rejected appeals for a truck-mounted EAGLS drone defense system, citing a lack of available assets.
Troops were deployed to the high-risk location without basic armaments. Personnel left crew-served and automatic weapons at Camp Arifjan, while quadcopter drones were visually observed surveilling Port Shuaiba in the days leading up to the attack.
Command Decisions Under Fire
Following the initiation of hostilities on February 28, early warning alarms forced personnel into bunkers for hours.
Unit leadership rapidly grew impatient with the operational disruptions.
Barnes mandated that essential staff remain inside the targeted building during incoming alerts. Simultaneously, Command Sgt. Maj. Javier Camposano Jr. continuously pressured subordinates to clear the alarms so personnel could resume working.
Minutes after an all-clear was finally authorized on March 1, a single Iranian drone penetrated the airspace and detonated inside the main operations center.
The concussive blast caused devastating structural damage and severe casualties.
In the immediate aftermath, Barnes ordered a nearby soldier to abandon the remaining personnel and flee to a reinforced bunker.
“We shouldn’t have run out of the f---ing building,” the soldier recounted, describing how Barnes prevented him from returning to assist the wounded.
Neither Barnes nor Hinson participated in the extraction of casualties. Over 30 service members sustained injuries, while six were killed.
Medical Failures, Systemic Accountability
Evacuation protocols rapidly deteriorated following the strike. Wounded personnel were forced to self-evacuate to civilian medical centers in Kuwait City before eventually transferring to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany.
Upon arrival, European medical teams were entirely unaware of the incoming casualties.
Injured troops were missing from medical evacuation manifests and were subsequently denied formal admission.
U.S. Army Central continues to defend the initial deployment strategy, insisting the facility maintained adequate fortifications.
A pending internal investigation, overseen by Lt. Gen. Patrick Frank, assigns no punitive fault to the commanders involved.
