UAE Quietly Rebuilds Iran Relations While Seeking Deeper US, Israeli Defense Ties

The United Arab Emirates is executing a complex geopolitical maneuver in the wake of severe regional conflict, simultaneously restoring economic and diplomatic channels with Iran while rapidly accelerating its defense integration with the U.S. and Israel.
The dual-track strategy follows five months of severe disruption, during which a U.S.-Israeli military confrontation with Tehran triggered nearly 3,000 Iranian drone and missile strikes against American Arab allies.
Abu Dhabi is now pursuing a fragile détente with its neighbor, authorized by a recent memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran that extended a temporary truce and reopened the Strait of Hormuz.
Economic Thaw with Tehran
Commercial maritime traffic has resumed between Dubai ports and the Islamic republic, alongside the reinstatement of direct commercial flights.
Emirati authorities have also cleared the return of approximately 20,000 UAE-based Iranians who were displaced during the hostilities.
UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed al-Nahyan has assigned the sensitive de-escalation portfolio to three senior officials, including national security adviser Sheikh Tahnoon.
Initial diplomatic overtures have featured direct talks between Emirati leadership and senior Iranian negotiators.
The necessity of these economic ties remains sharp for Dubai, which relies heavily on Iranian trade and agricultural imports.
“Iran came and said ‘let’s talk’, and it would be foolish when your adversary comes to turn them down,” says Abdulkhaleq Abdulla, an Emirati academic.
Expanding Defense Architecture
Despite reopening diplomatic backchannels with Tehran, Abu Dhabi remains highly suspicious of Iranian capabilities and is aggressively hardening its military posture.
The UAE has grown deeply reliant on Israeli and American defense systems to shield its infrastructure.
During the height of the recent conflict, Israel supplied its Iron Dome and advanced Iron Beam laser systems to intercept incoming projectiles.
The diplomatic footprint reflects this shift, with the Israeli embassy in Abu Dhabi doubling in size over the past few months. Security cooperation now spans advanced technology, artificial intelligence, and port infrastructure.
“There are Israeli defense companies active in the UAE and based here permanently,” an Israeli official notes, detailing the expansion of bilateral operations.
Washington has concurrently rewarded the UAE with enhanced access to advanced American military hardware and high-tier artificial intelligence processors, citing Abu Dhabi's strategic utility during the hostilities.
Strategic Resilience Redesign
The vulnerability of the UAE’s critical infrastructure has prompted sweeping logistical adjustments to bypass the Strait of Hormuz.
Following severe supply chain bottlenecks that slashed capacity at the flagship Jebel Ali port, alternative routes are under rapid development.
State oil company Adnoc is accelerating a pipeline project to double export capacity from Fujairah, located on the eastern coastline outside the vital chokepoint.
Logistics firm DP World is similarly constructing two new terminals in the area.
Domestic contingency planning extends to physical security, with authorities evaluating proposals to bury critical oil pipelines and future data centers underground.
“The UAE finds itself in a difficult position: it has very little control over the dynamics that will profoundly affect its security and prosperity,” says Emile Hokayem at the International Institute for Strategic Studies.
