People close to President Donald Trump blame the Iran war for widespread Republican midterm losses, The Wall Street Journal reported. The war has lasted more than eight months with no end in sight.

The Journal said the conflict has also contributed to soaring energy prices. Democrats are projected to win control of the House.

Officials Call the War Misguided

Some White House officials and Republican allies told the Journal the war was misguided. They said the midterms would have looked very different if it had ended months ago.

The paper reported fingerpointing inside the administration. Some officials have begun to say Trump might consider changes to his team in a war-related reckoning.

The Atlantic earlier reported that Trump was weighing who to blame for the war. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was among the names.

Legacy Tied to the War

Some advisers inside and outside the White House are telling Trump his legacy will be forever intertwined with the war. He launched it alongside Israel in February.

Trump told Americans higher gas prices were worth the cost of dismantling Iran’s nuclear program. If Iran does not end its nuclear work, the advisers said, Trump will have lost political power. The war would have failed its central goal.
