The march, led by Palestine Action Group, was initially blocked by New South Wales police over traffic and safety concerns. NSW Premier Chris Minns supported the prohibition, warning of potential “chaos” on the bridge. However, Justice Belinda Rigg ruled that organiser Josh Lees had convincingly justified the urgency of protesting Gaza’s humanitarian crisis. While acknowledging safety concerns, the court found no evidence that prohibiting the event would enhance public safety. As a result, vehicle access to the bridge and surrounding roads was suspended during the march.

The ruling granted protesters legal protection under the Summary Offences Act, shielding them from charges related to obstructing public spaces. Despite heavy police presence, the event remained peaceful, with demonstrators ordered mid-march to turn around for safety reasons in coordination with police instructions.

Growing Calls For Palestinian Statehood Recognition

The demonstration coincides with increasing pressure on the Australian government to recognise Palestinian statehood. Australia’s stance remains cautious, even as countries like France, Canada, and the UK signal potential support for recognition at the UN General Assembly in September. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese reiterated that Australia would not be pressured by international momentum and insisted that any recognition must be tied to assurances of lasting security for Israel.

Public frustration was palpable among protesters. One attendee, Alec Beville, said the situation in Gaza resonated deeply with his family. “I know it's the other side of the world, but it affects us here massively,” he said, holding his toddler. Another protester, Zara Williams, described the situation as “forced starvation” and criticised the Australian government’s lack of sanctions on Israel.
