Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer vowed on Wednesday that Democrats will end the Iran war. He pointed to Congress’s control over spending as a key tool.
Schumer spoke at a news conference at the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, touting the party’s Senate win. Asked whether Democrats would use defense funding as leverage, he replied:
“Look, we are going to end the war. We have some Republicans already who have joined us in ending the war.”
He said the Founding Fathers had “the power of the purse as one of the ways of deterring a president.” He was referring to a president “who does war without the consent of the American people.”
“This War Must End”
Schumer also said Americans “don’t know what the heck we’re fighting for in Iran.” He accused Trump of changing his mind “day to day and minute to minute.”
“This war must end. It must end,” he said.
Four Republican senators backed the latest Iran war powers resolution, ABC News reported. Rand Paul, Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski and Thom Tillis voted for it, but it failed 49-50 on Sept. 24.
Iran War and the Midterms
Schumer said the new majority could reach 55 or 56 seats, according to a reporter at the event. Even some Trump allies blamed the Iran war for Republican losses.
