Russia has condemned the United States' newly announced Golden Dome missile defense system, warning it undermines the foundations of strategic stability and arms control.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova on Tuesday described the Golden Dome initiative as a “global missile defense system” that upends decades of balance built through mutual deterrence.

“The United States' Golden Dome project undermines the foundations of strategic stability,” Zakharova said during a briefing in Moscow, expressing concern that such a system would reduce the effectiveness of Russia’s nuclear deterrent and prompt an arms race.

Trump’s $175 Billion Defense Vision

The Golden Dome, a $175 billion project announced by U.S. President Donald Trump, is designed to shield the U.S. and its allies from potential missile attacks, specifically citing China and Russia as principal threats.

While the project echoes elements of Ronald Reagan’s controversial “Star Wars” program, Trump’s proposal envisions a globally integrated network of sensors, interceptors, and AI-driven early warning systems to counter hypersonic and intercontinental missile threats.

Moscow Sees Arms Control Erosion

Moscow has long viewed U.S. missile defense deployments in Europe and Asia as provocative. With the collapse of landmark agreements such as the INF Treaty and the uncertain future of New START, Russia argues that the Golden Dome could signal the end of reciprocal arms control mechanisms.

“This system effectively nullifies existing treaties and promotes unilateral advantage,” said a senior Russian security official, speaking anonymously.

Analysts warn that the introduction of such a defense network may prompt Russia and China to develop more advanced offensive weapons, such as maneuverable reentry vehicles and stealthy hypersonics, to evade interception.

NATO allies have so far not publicly endorsed the initiative, and it remains unclear how much international cooperation Washington expects or will receive for the project’s implementation.
