Hackers who claim to have breached Russia’s statistics agency have published death-certificate data that Militarnyi says points to at least 412,576 Russian military deaths since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The Ukrainian defense outlet reports that the database snapshot runs through Aug. 28, 2026, and excludes missing personnel and foreign mercenaries. The figures are the hackers’ interpretation of allegedly stolen records, not an official Russian casualty announcement.
The distinction between military and civilian deaths remains important. RosstatLeaks, the portal carrying the analysis, explicitly warns that the principal war-death code does not distinguish service members from civilians, including children and elderly residents of shelled towns.
What the Figures Count
The 412,576 figure matches the sum of three categories described by Militarnyi: 356,056 records carrying the ICD-10 code Y36 for war operations; 38,229 citing the consequences of hostilities or wording about combat; and 18,291 marked as deaths in military operations without a cause-of-death code.
That is a count of death records selected by the project’s methodology, not a combined tally of soldiers killed and wounded. It also does not establish that every person counted was a soldier killed on the battlefield. Public estimates that put combined troop casualties above 2 million count killed and wounded together and are not the same measure.
The project’s wider documentary count reaches 440,982 after including additional categories, among them non-combat deaths of service members and deaths recorded in Ukraine or occupied territory without a specified cause. Adding an estimate for further records without a stated cause brings its broader total to 450,100.
Those totals measure different categories and should not be treated as interchangeable. The portal also says delays between a death and its registration leave recent months incomplete.
Rosstat Disputes the Breach
Belarusian Cyberpartisans and Silent Crow claim responsibility for the attack. The groups say they accessed Rosstat’s internal systems before a destructive operation overnight on Oct. 31–Nov. 1.
Rosstat acknowledges cyberattacks but denies that its databases were compromised or information leaked, according to The Kyiv Independent. The outlet says it could not independently verify the records or casualty estimates.
Separate counts use different evidence. The Kyiv Independent reports that Mediazona, BBC Russian and volunteers had identified 285,881 Russian military deaths by Nov. 6 through public-source research. That incomplete, name-by-name count is not a validation of the leaked dataset or a directly comparable estimate of the full death toll.
Political assessments of the war’s human cost, including Finland’s comparison of monthly Russian losses with Soviet deaths in Afghanistan, likewise rest on separate evidence.
