Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said Washington’s response to Iran’s demands “was not convincing.” He wrote on X on Tuesday, Nov. 3, that the US must answer Iran’s seven conditions “completely and explicitly.”
Only then, he said, will the Strait of Hormuz open. The post is in Persian, and the quotes here are our translation.
What Rezaei Wrote
Rezaei said the US response to Iran’s “rights and demands” fell short. He said Americans must respond to the seven conditions in full, clearly, and then act on them.
He did not say which US response he meant. He also did not say what was missing from it.
Iranian officials have long said Hormuz will stay restricted until the conditions are met. Rezaei’s post repeats that line.
Who Rezaei Is
Rezaei is a former Revolutionary Guards commander and a major general. Reuters calls him Iran’s security chief and says he is secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, Reuters reported.
“Security chief” is media shorthand for that post. The council is Iran’s top body for national security policy.
The Seven Conditions
Iran sent the conditions to Washington through Qatari mediators in late September. They include ending hostilities, releasing frozen assets and lifting limits on oil exports, Anadolu reported.
Tehran also demands an end to the US naval blockade of its ports. On Oct. 11, Rezaei called an earlier US reply “insufficient,” saying some conditions were accepted and others unclear.
Where the Talks Stand
Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf said earlier on Tuesday that Iran had given a “firm and rational response.” We covered his remarks.
Qatari mediators visited Tehran on Monday night, then returned to Doha, as we reported. Qatar says both sides are reviewing its proposals and that it seeks an interim deal, Anadolu reported.
A senior Iranian official told Reuters the sides remain far from a deal. Overnight, US forces carried out “defensive” strikes on Iran’s Qeshm island, Reuters reported.
