A £100 million ($133 million) luxury superyacht linked to Russian President Vladimir Putin is fleeing to the Arctic port of Murmansk, accompanied by a heavily armed Russian warship.
The 82-meter vessel, the Graceful, is traversing the Norwegian coast under the shadow of a U.S.-led NATO monitoring effort, according to The Telegraph.
Naval Escort and Arctic Flight
The deployment underscores escalating security anxieties in Moscow. A heavily armed I-class destroyer, the Severomorsk, alongside the 7,500-ton salvage and patrol ship Voevoda, is escorting the vessel.
The convoy recently transitioned through the Danish Strait, where German and Danish naval patrol assets monitored its progress.
The superyacht subsequently deactivated its automatic identification system upon entering the North Sea, though its naval support vessels continue to broadcast positions.
Evading Ukrainian Drone Strikes
The multi-million-pound asset is relocating to northern Russia to mitigate risks from Ukrainian long-range drone incursions.
Western security analysts describe the massive naval deployment as defensive overkill designed to prevent potential interdiction or destruction.
The repositioning follows a successful Ukrainian drone operation against the Kronstadt naval base on Kotlin Island, which damaged the modern warship RFS Boiky.
Satellite analysis confirms the strike has left the strategic Gulf of Finland base severely depleted of active naval hulls.
Additional deep-theater operations, including a previous strike on Caspian Sea assets nearly 1,000 miles from Ukraine, have demonstrated systemic vulnerabilities in Russian air defense networks.
Heightened Kremlin Security
The maritime withdrawal coincides with a broader expansion of the Russian president’s personal security apparatus.
The Federal Protective Service has expanded its core detachment to 812 personnel, introducing severe communication bans on immediate staff.
Defensive measures have also intensified at mainland installations. The secluded presidential retreat at Lake Valdai now features 27 specialized towers equipped with Pantsir anti-aircraft missile systems.
The Sanctions Dragnet
Western tracking of the Graceful dates back to the eve of the 2022 invasion, when it was hastily transferred from a Hamburg shipyard to Kaliningrad.
The asset was subsequently designated as blocked property under U.S. sanctions, prompting a renaming strategy for the Kosatka.
The vessel represents the second high-profile luxury asset linked to the Russian leadership to exit European waters.
Another vessel, the 71-meter Victoria, recently departed the Black Sea to seek haven in Bodrum, Türkiye.
