Thousands of Ukrainian citizens took to the streets across multiple major cities on Thursday to protest President Volodymyr Zelensky’s sudden dismissal of Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.
The ouster of the 35-year-old official, widely credited with modernizing Kyiv’s drone warfare capabilities, triggered immediate domestic upheaval and deep dismay among European allies.
Fedorov decisively rejected a subsequent offer to serve as a presidential adviser.
He publicly accused Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi and the broader General Staff of actively obstructing systemic defense reforms.
The ousted minister highlighted severe bureaucratic resistance to adopting modern, asymmetric warfare strategies.
“Instead of coming up with a way to asymmetrically defeat Russia, he came up with a way to divide the country, and that’s where the problem is,” Fedorov said regarding Syrskyi.
He further alleged that the military hierarchy bases critical battlefield resource allocations on personal loyalty rather than hard operational data.
Fedorov argued that the entrenched system consistently blocks new initiatives and personnel capable of generating innovative ideas.
Nationwide Civil Disruption
Demonstrations erupted in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Lviv, Dnipro, and Odesa as citizens demanded Fedorov’s reinstatement.
Outside the President’s Office and a central Kyiv theater, crowds warned that replacing effective leaders with compliant officials would lead to military defeat.
The political shockwaves immediately disrupted state operations. Deputy Air Force Commander Pavlo Elizarov resigned in direct protest, while the state-aligned outlet UNITED24 Media suspended all publications to allow staff to join the demonstrations.
Former presidential spokesperson Iuliia Mendel issued a scathing condemnation of the administration.
She claimed the current leadership actively fosters chaos and autocracy while intentionally stifling institutional reform.
Presidential Response and Next Steps
Zelensky publicly acknowledged the civil unrest, validating the citizens' right to demonstrate during wartime.
He admitted a lack of unity at the highest levels of government and accepted partial responsibility for the institutional friction.
The Ukrainian president maintained that internal divisions forced his hand. "During wartime, the president should not be making choices in such a situation. I would very much like to see unity," Zelensky stated.
The administration is now evaluating former Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko as a potential successor at the Defense Ministry.
Zelensky indicated that Klymenko could effectively dismantle aggressive and controversial forced-mobilization tactics currently used by recruitment officers.
The leadership overhaul arrives at a critical juncture for Kyiv’s military trajectory.
European Union Defense Commissioner Andrius Kubilius openly characterized the dismissal as a significant surprise, noting Fedorov's substantial achievements in office.
Parallel to the defense crisis, the Ukrainian parliament confirmed state energy executive Sergii Koretskyi as the new prime minister.
The sweeping governmental changes occur as Kyiv lobbies Western allies for advanced air-defense systems ahead of the winter campaign.
