Tensions between Lebanon and Israel escalated as a strike hit southern Beirut, casting doubt on ongoing efforts to maintain calm. The targeted attack has raised concerns about renewed conflict in the region.

Haret Hreik Neighborhood Targeted

Israel struck a building in Beirut’s Haret Hreik district with three rockets just two days after Lebanon’s president announced the country’s willingness to enter negotiations. Multiple ambulances rushed to the scene as residents were thrown into panic.

Tabatabai Killed in the Attack

Hezbollah confirmed that Haytham Ali Tabatabai, a senior Hezbollah commander, was killed in the strike. Tabatabai was the most senior Hezbollah commander to be killed by Israel since the ceasefire in November 2024 aimed at reducing hostilities between the two countries.

Casualties and Injuries

At least five people, including Tabatabai, were killed, and 28 others were wounded in the attack on the Hreik neighborhood. Hezbollah officials warned that the strike could trigger further escalation across Lebanon.

Israel’s Target and Previous Attempts

The Israeli army stated that Tabatabai was “eliminated” in the strike. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirmed that Tabatabai was the operation’s primary target. Israeli media reported that this was the third attempt by the military to kill him since last year’s conflict.

Hezbollah Reacts Strongly

Senior Hezbollah official Mahmoud Koumati said the attack “crosses a red line” and that the group’s leadership is assessing whether to respond. Koumati added, “Today’s strike on the southern suburbs opens the door for a broader escalation of attacks across Lebanon.”
