International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director-General Rafael Mariano Grossi’s remarks came in an interview on October 22, 2025, amid renewed regional tensions following Israeli airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities in June.
Iran’s 60% Enriched Stockpile
Grossi told Geneva Solutions that Iran’s stockpile includes about 400 kg of uranium enriched to 60 percent purity, nearing the 90 percent threshold typical of weapons-grade material.
The IAEA calculates that between 25 kg and 42 kg of such uranium could suffice for a single nuclear device, meaning Tehran’s current reserves could yield material for around ten bombs if further enriched.
“No Evidence of Weaponization”
The IAEA chief stressed there is “no indication that Iran intends to build nuclear weapons,” citing continued membership in the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
However, he confirmed that access to facilities at Isfahan, Natanz, and Fordow remains restricted, with verification curtailed since inspectors lost full visibility in 2021.
JCPOA Limits Expire
Several Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) restrictions lapsed in October 2025, enabling Iran to expand its centrifuge fleet and enrichment activities.
As of mid-2025, the IAEA recorded a total enriched-uranium inventory exceeding 9,000 kg, including traces enriched to 84 percent at undeclared sites, according to the agency’s June 2025 quarterly report.
Inspectors Seek Renewed Access
Grossi warned that without restored oversight, uncertainty will grow over Iran’s nuclear intentions. He lamented the “loss of active diplomacy” in forums such as the United Nations, calling for a return to negotiation channels to prevent further escalation.
