Texas Gov. Greg Abbott conceded the governor’s race to Democrat Gina Hinojosa on Tuesday night. He told supporters at his Austin watch party that he had called her to congratulate her.
“There are still votes to be counted, but mathematically we are not going to be able to win this election,” Abbott said. He thanked the crowd for letting him serve 12 years as governor. “I love this state,” he said.
CNN Projects Hinojosa the Winner
CNN projected Hinojosa the winner shortly after the concession. Decision Desk HQ’s last update before the speech showed her ahead 54.1% to 44.6%. About 78% of the vote had been counted.
Hinojosa, a state representative from Austin, will be the first Democrat elected governor of Texas since Ann Richards in 1990. She will also be the state’s first Latina governor.
A Blue Night in Texas
Abbott had led Texas since January 2015 and was seeking a fourth term. His defeat ends three decades of Republican control of the governor’s office.
Democrats also won the state’s Senate race, where James Talarico defeated Ken Paxton. President Donald Trump has said he will accept the midterm results and work with Democrats.
