France on Wednesday confirmed its first domestic case of the Ebola virus in a doctor returning from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The French health ministry announced the positive identification, marking the first time the deadly hemorrhagic fever has been detected outside the African continent during the current outbreak.

The diagnosis is also the first time an Ebola case has been officially identified on French territory.

During the major West African outbreak in 2014, two patients were transported to France for treatment, but both had been diagnosed abroad prior to their arrival.

Isolation Protocols Activated

The infected doctor was placed in isolation immediately upon arrival in mainland France.

Health authorities secured the patient even before the disease was officially identified by medical personnel.

Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu is monitoring the situation closely alongside health officials.

The Regional Outbreak

The Democratic Republic of Congo declared its 17th Ebola outbreak on May 15.

The declaration followed several unexplained deaths in the volatile and mineral-rich eastern Ituri province. The current outbreak has also spread to affect neighboring Uganda.

Medical authorities confirm the outbreak is driven by the Bundibugyo strain of the virus. There is currently no approved vaccine or treatment available for this specific strain.

Despite the continental breach, public health experts estimate that the risk of global transmission remains low due to the virus's relatively low contagiousness.
