U.S. Senator John Fetterman has warned that he would leave the Democratic Party if it officially adopts an anti-Israel platform, drawing a firm red line over his party’s changing foreign policy trajectory.

The Pennsylvania Democrat emphasized that while he currently has no plans to exit, the growing influence of progressive factions hostile to Israel poses a fundamental challenge to his continued affiliation.

“If our party ever becomes, and just makes it official, the anti-Israel party, that’s when I would leave because that’s been a moral clarity for me,” Fetterman stated during an interview at the Hill Nation Summit in Washington.

Internal Party Divisions

Fetterman expressed deep concern about the party's direction, questioning why Democrats would distance themselves from a critical Middle Eastern ally that shares many of their core democratic values.

His anxieties are driven by the rising strength of the progressive base, which has increasingly challenged traditional U.S. security assistance to Israel.

“My long-term concern has been with the Democratic Party, as I am a member of that, is that our party is going to back away and turn their back to Israel,” Fetterman warned.

As evidence of this shift, Fetterman pointed to a legislative push led by Representative Thomas Massie to eliminate $3.3 billion in annual security aid to Israel.

The vote exposed a split among top House leaders, with Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries opposing the measure while Democratic Whip Katherine Clark supported it, a move Fetterman characterized as representative of a broader, troubling trend.

Primary Victories Spark Concern

The senator also criticized efforts by fellow party members to align with deeply anti-Israel voters.

He pointed to recent primary races as proof of a hostile shift in candidate selection.

Specifically, Fetterman raised alarms over the Michigan Senate Democratic primary, where progressive candidate Abdul El-Sayed has performed strongly in polling.

He warned that if El-Sayed wins the nomination, Democrats will be forced to spend millions more to remain competitive in the crucial swing state, noting that Republican Mike Rogers narrowly lost the seat in 2024.

Fetterman also targeted progressives for returning to controversial platforms such as the "defund the police" movement, which he argued contributed to the party's presidential loss in 2024.

He pointed to New York’s 13th Congressional District, where activist Darializa Avila Chevalier, who previously advocated for abolishing police, borders, and prisons, and denied Israel's existence, defeated incumbent Representative Adriano Espaillat.

Leadership Failures in Maine

The senator directed sharp criticism at Democratic colleagues for their backing of progressive insurgent Graham Platner in the Maine Senate race.

Platner withdrew from the contest following allegations of rape made by a Maine resident, Jenny Racicot.

Fetterman expressed intense anger toward Senator Bernie Sanders and other progressive leaders who championed Platner's candidacy despite serious warning signs.

He argued that the failure of leadership to properly vet the candidate has thrown a highly consequential Senate race into chaos, undermining efforts to defeat Republican Senator Susan Collins and reclaim the Senate majority.

“Where’s the accountability?” Fetterman asked, demanding to know why prominent backers like Sanders and Senator Chris Van Hollen have not apologized to the victim.
