Russia could launch a limited military campaign against a NATO country within one year of the conclusion of the war in Ukraine, the Dutch Defense Ministry warned on Monday.

In its annual defense policy strategy document, the ministry declared that Europe currently exists in a "grey area" between war and peace.

The report cited assessments from Dutch intelligence services indicating that Russia is preparing for a long-term confrontation with Europe.

In the worst-case scenario outlined by officials, a limited war against NATO members could materialize just one year after the conflict in Ukraine ends.

Impending NATO Summit

The stark assessment arrives as NATO members prepare for a summit in Türkiye's capital, Ankara, scheduled for July 7 and 8.

The potential threat from Moscow is expected to be a high priority during the upcoming discussions.

NATO chief Mark Rutte recently stated that Russia could be positioned to use military force against the alliance within five years.

Unmanned Military Expansion

To counter the growing threat, the Dutch government is moving to rapidly bolster its defense investments.

The Netherlands has established a goal of transitioning half of its operational military capacities to unmanned systems within five years.

To achieve this target, the government intends to create a specialized development laboratory.

The facility will be tasked with designing and constructing advanced drones specifically designed to combat other unmanned aerial vehicles.

Defense Minister Dilan Yesilgoz emphasized the pressing nature of the strategic shift.

"The question is whether Europe and the Netherlands will be strong enough in time to protect our freedom, security, and way of life," Yesilgoz stated.

She added that while this preparedness is the responsibility of every generation, it has rarely been so urgent.
