AfD co-leader Alice Weidel has blamed the Iran war for the scale of the Republican midterm defeat, dpa reported. She also said President Donald Trump broke a promise on foreign policy.
Weidel said it was not unusual for the president’s party to lose the midterms. “The scale of the Republicans’ defeat is, however, remarkable,” she told dpa. She added that it could be “explained above all by the devastating consequences of the Iran war.”
“Broken Promise”
Trump had promised his voters “no interventionist foreign policy,” Weidel said. “This broken promise has now come back to bite the Republicans.”
She called for both the Iran war and the war in Ukraine to end as quickly as possible. That, she said, was in Europe’s and Germany’s interest.
A Close MAGA Ally
The AfD is closely allied with Trump’s MAGA movement, t-online noted. Before Germany’s 2025 election, Weidel appeared in a livestream with Elon Musk.
Other AfD figures split over the result, Handelsblatt reported. Weidel’s view echoes Trump allies in the U.S., some of whom also blamed the Iran war for the losses.
