Outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the U.K. legislature as the “gayest parliament” in the world during a reception at Downing Street on Monday.
The remarks centered on domestic representation as his administration faces mounting scrutiny over its handling of LGBTQ+ policies from advocacy groups in the U.K.
Addressing attendees at a Pride event on June 29, the outgoing premier emphasized the high volume of gay politicians currently seated in Westminster.
He asserted that no other global legislative body matches the current composition in London.
“I’m really proud that we got the gayest Parliament,” Starmer stated. He added that he was unaware of any other parliament exceeding this demographic metric.
Starmer referenced various measures, including a public health initiative to eliminate new HIV transmissions by 2030.
Shifting to foreign policy, Starmer announced a £21 million financial package aimed at international LGBTQ+ advocacy.
This funding coincides with the creation of a new Special Envoy position dedicated to the issue.
