Britain, Italy, Switzerland, and Indonesia have emerged on a shortlist of nations being evaluated to oversee and verify the disarmament of Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.

The selection follows high-level, U.S.-mediated negotiations held in Rome between Israeli and Lebanese representatives.

Under the proposed framework, which builds on a June agreement, a phased withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon remains conditional on the complete disarmament of the Lebanese armed group.

Mandate and Operational Scope

The four shortlisted countries could help shape the verification mechanism's operational parameters, supply supervisory personnel, or deploy military units to conduct ground inspections.

A Lebanese official confirmed that both sides had agreed on potential state contributors, though the final selection rests with Washington.

While conversations remain in early phases, a source with direct knowledge of the negotiations characterized the diplomatic outlook as "cautiously optimistic."

Diplomatic Responses and Friction Points

In response to queries, a spokesperson for the British foreign ministry stated that London stood ready to support efforts "to de-escalate tensions and long-term security, particularly in southern Lebanon."

Switzerland’s foreign ministry acknowledged it was evaluating avenues to support "various stabilization processes," while Israeli representatives cautioned that negotiations over the oversight entity remain ongoing without a final agreement.

The Israeli military currently maintains a 10-kilometer security zone within southern Lebanon, insisting it will not withdraw until Hezbollah's disarmament is fully verified.

Inspection Mandates and Property Access

A major operational sticking point involves village inspections, where Israeli negotiators are demanding access to inspect private residences.

Lebanese military officials have resisted widespread residential searches without individual legal warrants, citing risks of provoking domestic conflict in southern territories.

Any international deployment would require a formal mandate, most likely initiated via an invitation from the Lebanese government under an Israeli-approved framework.

Diplomatic sources indicate both Washington and Israel oppose United Nations involvement, while European capitals may reject oversight by U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed Board of Peace.
