Netanyahu Derides UK as 'Islamic Republic of Britain'

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu disparaged the United Kingdom as the “Islamic Republic of Britain” during a recent media appearance.

The remarks risk exacerbating diplomatic friction with London, a historical partner now governed by a critical Labour administration.

Speaking on the Melech Blitzer Haim podcast hosted by Avi Harush, the Israeli premier bemoaned shifting European attitudes toward his country.

He contrasted contemporary British politics with the era of Randolph Churchill, a journalist who covered the Six-Day War favorably for Israel.

Addressing the absence of such reporting today, Netanyahu remarked: “Go find that in Britain today, in what is called the Islamic Republic of Britain. Go find it.”

UK First Islamic Republic With a Nuke?

When questioned whether this description applied to the broader European continent, the Israeli leader invoked past commentary attributed to U.S. Vice President JD Vance.

He utilized the reference to juxtapose London’s geopolitical trajectory with Tehran's nuclear ambitions.

“Someone said the first Islamic republic with nuclear weapons will be the Islamic Republic of Britain,” Netanyahu stated.

He then pivoted to Israel's regional security operations against Iranian infrastructure, adding: “We are making sure there won’t be another one here, in Iran.”

Domestic Pushback

The comments underscore a widening diplomatic chasm between Tel Aviv and the British government.

Under the leadership of Andy Burnham, the incumbent Labour party has maintained a highly critical posture regarding Israeli policies, though comprehensive bilateral ties technically remain intact.

Netanyahu’s rhetoric generated immediate domestic censure from opposition figures.

Avi Dabush, a politician affiliated with the Democrats party list, condemned the premier's diplomatic conduct on the social media platform X.

Highlighting the strategic risks of antagonizing a permanent UN Security Council member, Dabush wrote: “You are a prime minister. You have responsibility; there is such a word, and you sit there making jokes about Britain.”
