After 4-Hour Kushner Meeting, No Indication Netanyahu Will Choose Peace
A four-hour meeting between Jared Kushner and Benjamin Netanyahu concluded without any clear signal that Israel is prepared to advance the White House Gaza peace framework, as domestic political pressures and security disputes keep negotiations stalled.

A four-hour negotiation between White House envoy Jared Kushner and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ended on Monday without any definitive commitment from Israel to advance a U.S.-backed peace initiative in Gaza.
Kushner pressed the Israeli leadership to adopt calibrated measures to evaluate whether Hamas is genuinely prepared to surrender its weaponry, according to Axios.
However, Netanyahu offered no tangible signal that he is ready to make concessions, maintaining a rigid stance driven by domestic political friction and skepticism over security guarantees.
Diplomatic Deadlock
The marathon discussions in Jerusalem followed Kushner’s meetings in Egypt with Hamas representatives alongside mediators from Egypt, Qatar, and Türkiye.
Kushner’s delegation included Nikolay Mladenov, High Representative of the Trump administration's Gaza Board of Peace, alongside former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and senior advisers Aryeh Lightstone and Liran Tancman.
Netanyahu immediately challenged Kushner over his direct engagement with Hamas leadership in Cairo.
The U.S. envoy defended the channel as necessary to verify the group’s willingness to demilitarize, pointing to previous direct diplomacy that secured captive releases.
"The last time Steve Witkoff and I met with Hamas leaders, it led to the release of all the hostages," Kushner told Netanyahu, referencing the negotiated release of captives taken during the October 7, 2023 attacks.
Electoral Politics
Netanyahu utilized the four-hour session to present polling data showing broad domestic opposition to rebuilding Gaza before complete demilitarization.
Facing an election in October and mounting criticism from political rivals over potential compromises, the Israeli prime minister reiterated that operations against active threats must proceed unhindered.
To reinforce his reluctance, Netanyahu directed the chiefs of the Shin Bet intelligence agency and Israeli military intelligence to brief the American team on documented Hamas violations.
The White House peace proposal envisions Hamas transferring arms to a Palestinian technocratic administration, which would subsequently hand them to an International Stabilization Force for destruction.
While Washington insists reconstruction will not commence until demilitarization concludes, Netanyahu showed little appetite to test the arrangement.
Unresolved Rifts
Friction deepened during the talks when Donald Trump stated publicly that Israel must halt airstrikes in Gaza.
The discrepancy over what constitutes an "imminent threat" remains a central point of contention between Israeli defense officials and the Board of Peace.
To prevent an outright collapse in communication, both sides agreed to establish two bilateral working groups focusing on demilitarization and humanitarian relief, particularly water and sanitation infrastructure.
They also outlined a joint deconfliction channel with Egyptian mediators to monitor field violations.
Despite the procedural agreements, Netanyahu’s office issued a post-meeting statement reaffirming that disarmament must be finalized before any reconstruction begins.
The stance leaves the U.S. administration without a clear roadmap or a committed partner willing to initiate practical steps toward peace.
