U.S. Special Envoy to Syria, Thomas Barrack, stated that peace between Syria and Israel is achievable through dialogue and non-aggression, emphasizing that America’s role is to empower local efforts rather than impose external solutions.
In a notable shift in tone, the U.S. Special Envoy to Syria announced that peace between Syria and Israel “is a solvable problem,” stressing that it begins with “a dialogue.” Speaking candidly, the envoy said, “We help not by dictating from the top, but by freeing the people from the bottom to do what they do best.”
He proposed starting with a basic non-aggression agreement and discussions around borders and boundaries. “America’s role is simply to start having a dialogue amongst us,” he said, signaling a more facilitative role for Washington rather than direct mediation.
In a major diplomatic signal, the envoy revealed that the U.S. President will soon declare Syria is no longer designated a “state sponsor of terrorism.” This move would mark a dramatic shift in U.S. policy, potentially easing decades-long sanctions and political isolation of Damascus.
The envoy defended the decision by referencing America’s broader vision: “America’s intent and the President’s vision is that we have to give this young government a chance by not interfering.”
Highlighting military achievements, the envoy praised the U.S. Armed Forces, stating they had “brilliantly accomplished 99 percent” of their anti-ISIS mission. The statement underscores Washington’s confidence in the diminishing threat posed by the group, suggesting a strategic pivot in U.S. regional engagement.
