In a statement, Cheney’s family said: “Richard B. Cheney, the 46th Vice President of the United States, passed away last night. During his final moments, he was surrounded by his wife of 61 years, Lynne, and their daughters Liz and Mary, along with other family members.”
Medical reports indicated that Cheney had long suffered from heart and vascular disease, and his pneumonia symptoms had worsened significantly in recent days.
One of Washington’s Most Powerful and Controversial Figures
Born in Wyoming, Dick Cheney began his political career in the 1970s, serving in Congress before becoming White House Chief of Staff under President Gerald Ford. From 1989 to 1993, he served as Secretary of Defense under President George H. W. Bush. Between 2001 and 2009, Cheney became one of the most powerful figures in U.S. politics as Vice President to George W. Bush.
Cheney was widely seen as the chief strategist behind the post-9/11 “War on Terror.” His support for the 2003 invasion of Iraq, Guantanamo Bay detention policies, and the CIA’s controversial interrogation practices drew both domestic and international criticism.
Legacy of Power, Controversy, and Influence
Cheney’s political legacy is often described as a redefinition of the vice presidency, transforming the office into a central pillar of executive power in Washington.
Critics argue that he expanded presidential authority and fostered a culture of secrecy that weakened democratic oversight.
Supporters, however, hail him as a leader of exceptional resolve and decisiveness in times of crisis.
Family and Political Reactions
His daughter, Wyoming Congresswoman Liz Cheney, said following his passing: “My father served his country with unwavering loyalty. His legacy is one of courage, conviction, and duty.”
Former President George W. Bush paid tribute, describing Cheney as “one of the most consequential vice presidents in American history.”
