At the ceremony in Kilis, near the Syrian border, Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar announced that the Azerbaijani gas would help restart a 1,200-megawatt power plant. The gas will be routed through Aleppo and on to Homs, aiming to reactivate key plants that have stood idle due to a lack of fuel.
Bayraktar stated that the initiative would directly support residential and industrial consumption, and described it as a contribution to “normalising Syria.” The Turkish minister added that the project reflects broader goals of stability and infrastructure rehabilitation in the region.
This marks the second phase of Qatar’s energy support to Syria, following a previous electricity supply operation via Jordan in March that delivered 400 megawatts of power daily. The new gas pipeline and supply route reflect a deepening of regional cooperation with Syria’s new authorities, who took control following the December ouster of President Bashar al-Assad.
Syrian officials confirmed that the Azerbaijani gas would ease long-standing power outages, which have exceeded 20 hours per day in many regions. The project is expected to help stabilize the national grid and revitalize critical infrastructure across the country.
