The recent violence in Sweida peaked on July 13, when deadly clashes erupted between local armed groups and government forces, triggered by an attack on a security patrol in western Sweida. The confrontations left casualties on both sides and caused significant damage, especially in western districts of the city.
Following the ceasefire, aid convoys began to deliver flour, drinking water, medical supplies, and fuel—essentials that had been severely lacking during the blockade. However, residents like Fadi Nofal told Al Jazeera that the delivered supplies remain far below actual needs. He reported long lines at bakeries due to a flour shortage, paralyzed commercial activity, and market stagnation. “The situation is fragile. Armed group vehicles still patrol the streets after the army’s withdrawal from most positions inside the city,” he said.
Hundreds of Sweida residents—mostly university students and individuals with chronic illnesses—have fled to Damascus due to service breakdowns and healthcare inaccessibility. At the same time, some individuals stranded outside the province, particularly transport drivers, have begun returning following road reopenings and slight security improvements.
Youssef Abu Husseini, a representative of the Syrian Civil Defense at the Busr al-Sham crossing, stated that emergency teams had been on alert for days to help people leaving Sweida and provide transportation. He confirmed that crews also continue to handle urgent medical evacuations despite logistical and security obstacles.
Although the arrival of humanitarian aid and the relative calm offer some relief, locals and aid workers alike caution that the situation remains precarious, with no durable political resolution in sight and the risk of renewed conflict looming.
