Russia launched a large overnight attack targeting Ukraine’s energy system, striking a thermal power facility in the Kyiv region and triggering emergency repairs and localized blackouts. Kyiv officials said air defenses downed the majority of incoming drones, but several impacts caused fires and grid disruptions. The Energy Ministry stressed that power assets are civilian sites and urged residents to follow official updates on potential supply

Strike On Energy Infrastructure

The Energy Ministry said one of the region’s key thermal power plants came under “intense shelling,” describing the assault as designed “to cause maximum disruption” to homes, hospitals, schools and kindergartens. “Power generation facilities, transmission and distribution systems, and gas infrastructure are not military targets,” the ministry emphasized. Local channels reported hits in communities near the plant and parts of Kyiv, with repair teams and grid specialists deployed to contain outages and restore capacity.

Scale Of The Night Assault

Ukraine’s air defenders faced multiple inbound groups from shortly after midnight; alerts noted waves of drones across several regions. Air defense units said they neutralized 112 of 142 drones, a high interception rate that nonetheless could not prevent all damage as debris and direct hits affected grid nodes. The assault followed a broader campaign of strikes against energy facilities in recent weeks, including hits on central regions that sparked large fires.
