Morocco witnessed a fourth straight night of youth-led protests that escalated into arson, clashes, and looting across multiple cities, leaving hundreds injured and hundreds more in custody. The leaderless “GenZ 212” movement, organized on TikTok and Discord, rails against strained public services and stadium spending ahead of the 2030 World Cup, as authorities vowed to deal “firmly and strictly” with unlawful acts.
What Sparked The Unrest
Demonstrators accuse the government of prioritising World Cup infrastructure while hospitals and schools deteriorate. Protest chants included “Health care first, we don’t want the World Cup,” capturing a wider frustration over jobs and regional disparities.
Where Violence Broke Out
Destruction and street battles were reported in the south and east, notably in Inzegane and Ait Amira near Agadir, and in Oujda, where a police vehicle rammed protesters, injuring one person, according to MAP and local rights groups.
Casualties And Arrests
The Interior Ministry reported 263 injured security personnel and 23 injured civilians, along with 409 arrests. Authorities also counted 142 police vehicles and 20 private cars damaged or burned during the unrest.
Voices From The Streets
“The right to health, education and a dignified life is not an empty slogan but a serious demand,” organizers wrote on Discord, urging protesters to remain peaceful while condemning “repressive security approaches.”
Government And Rights Groups’ Responses
Officials deny prioritising stadiums over social services and say parliament will debate hospital reforms. AMDH, meanwhile, says arrests have topped 1,000 since the weekend and criticised what it called a disproportionate response. Amnesty International urged authorities to engage with protesters’ “legitimate demands” for social and economic rights.
