The IDF’s mass call-up includes ultra-Orthodox men aged 16.5 to 26. Around 24,000 haredim were previously summoned, but actual enlistment numbers remained low. The military's goal for the coming year is to integrate 4,800 ultra-Orthodox recruits, a significant increase from previous years.
Haredi leadership continues to oppose conscription, arguing that yeshiva students fulfill their national duty through religious study. Public demonstrations against the draft have disrupted transportation and triggered debates in parliament.
To increase compliance, the IDF is requesting government backing for targeted sanctions and has prepared 250–300 detention spots for those avoiding service. Arrests of draft dodgers may begin in September, with enforcement expected at airports, checkpoints, and other public venues to avoid confrontations in sensitive areas like Mea Shearim.
Of the 14,000 individuals currently classified as draft dodgers, a third are reportedly close to being declared detainable. The IDF may increase detention capacity and streamline the process to move from summons to arrest faster than in past years.
Despite widespread opposition, two haredi IDF companies are already serving in combat zones such as Gaza. One of these units was involved in operations that reportedly led to the deaths of 41 militants.
The army has also reactivated thousands of previously exempt reservists, reflecting broader efforts to address personnel shortages. A deal to support the draft legally has stalled in the Knesset, prompting the IDF to proceed without new legislation before the parliamentary recess.
